Program Overview
The MA in Education with a concentration of Reading & Language program is designed to prepare teachers for specialized teaching of reading and language arts and for curriculum and instructional leadership in the field of language and literacy. Required course work focuses on the nature of literacy development and the improvement of classroom curriculum, and methods that emphasize the relationship of reading to other language and concept learning. Teachers, administrators, and curriculum specialists in all areas are encouraged to take elective courses in the graduate program to increase their knowledge of literacy.
Students who wish to pursue an MA degree AND an Added Authorization in Reading and Literacy may do so concurrently. For more information, please read the Reading & Language Program Handbook.
Program Structure
Education Core Courses (18 units)
To acquire a broad perspective on issues related to education and social justice in our communities, students take core courses with students from all concentrations in the Education MA degree.
Reading & Language Core Courses (15 units)
- EDRL 521A: Language Development in First and Second Languages (Spring only, 3 units)
- EDRL 522: Assessment & Teaching in Reading and Language Arts (Spring only, 3 units)
- EDRL 524 : Literature & Literacy (Fall only, 3 units)
- EDCT 552: Educational Technology Praxis (Fall only, 3 units)
- EDRL 527A: Clinical Field Experience in Reading and Language Arts (Summer only, 3 units)
Advising
Prior to beginning the MA program, students meet with the Reading and Language advisor to develop a preliminary plan for enrolling in courses. Each semester thereafter, students meet with their advisor to solidify this plan and to discuss their progress through the MA program.
